Stanford University The Department of Art & Art History offers courses of study in the history of art, the practice of art, and film and media studies, leading to the following degrees: B.A. in Art History, B.A. in Art Practice, B.A. in Film and Media Studies, M.F.A. in Art Practice, M.F.A. in Design, M.F.A. in Documentary Film and Video, Ph.D. in Art History, Joint Ph.D. in Art History and Humanities. These courses offer special opportunities for the students to increase their understanding of the meaning and purpose of the arts, their historical development, their role in society, and their relationship to other humanistic disciplines such as literature, music and philosophy. Work in the classroom and studio is intended to intensify visual perception of the formal and expressive means of art, and to encourage insight into a variety of technical processes.
